SOCIAL BOXES

These multiple wall sculptures, Social Boxes: Insight and Action, originally consisted of separate graphite drawings depicting the movement and gathering of small, quickly drawn lines, dashes, and dots. Further embellished with dimensional paints, glossy areas, and cracking textures, I continued layering, exposing, and blending by creating burnt or cut holes and obscuring parts with gestural marks and brushed stains. Life feeds work, and work feeds life; during this process, I realized these drawings served as metaphors for my thoughts on social interactions.

Social gatherings are fascinating, especially the images of groups of people. At events, I often see these groups, each immersed in their own experiences, thoughts, and beliefs. I imagine each person sharing their stories, achievements, and opinions within this shared space. Considering how to represent communication in life, I thought of a container—an object that holds our internal beliefs. These containers twist, turn, bulge, and bow, with gestures, movements, and postures reflecting internal feelings. As they twist and turn, these boxes illustrate the reciprocal effects of identifying with others and shaping our social relationships. When grouped, their undulating surfaces create a social landscape—an interwoven pattern of containment and connection.
