COLLECTIONS
When seeking to know your identity and where you belong, there’s a desire to group, like with like, but not necessarily matching. These drawings grew from that kind of addition—a collection of impromptu sketches, of imagined miniature plants, seeds, and bugs. In the process, I felt no need to identify the object, real or not, or to create categories. As each small piece was drawn, I only needed to select what fit neatly into that next space. Folded surfaces, tendrils, and spiked edges gathered and floated around a central point. Though this point was not where I started drawing the collection, I found that the shape and their outlines ultimately complemented the elements in the surrounding pieces. Interestingly, throughout this work, I unconsciously examined and characterized each little drawing by its shape, size, and texture without attempting to conjure up a name or classify the miniature form into an imagined taxonomy.
