Samples consist of twenty-one mixed media paintings arranged in a grid three high by six wide, emerging from my exploration and investigation process for teaching purposes. They served as a space where I set aside restrictions and released myself from should and shouldn’t. With these pieces, I was particularly interested in exploring inherent physical qualities. The natural properties of the materials guided my decisions to layer, pool, paste, squeeze, flood, smear, cut, and sometimes burn. This ‘sampling’ of action and substance forms the conceptual basis, and the building and layering reflect the growth and surface characteristics of the natural forms that inspire me. Compositions are not fixed; the work evolves with the pursuit of each question, “What if?” From classroom demonstrations to my studio table, I found myself working with multiple square canvases progressing through different processes—glues, pastes, gels, inks, acrylics, dyes, all interacting with water and fire. The results, appropriately, are detailed samplings of my thought processes.
