OUR RELATIONSHIP
These drawings developed during my father’s physical and mental decline. Using imagery of leaves, a recurring theme in my work, I observed how each set of leaves and their placement within the circle reflected aspects of his illness and our relationship. Working within the circle was comforting; it symbolizes wholeness and completeness. The leaves gradually shrink, warp, and darken. They mirror each other with contrasting cool and warm tones, while two closely bound leaves show overlapping patterns. Shared traits, shared behaviors. The circle of our relationship remained the same, even as another one, created of family and friends, expanded to protect and comfort me.
Ultimately, death can leave you feeling incomplete, so I left the final drawing unfinished.
